Lumiar School Kent
We are an educational pilot project based in Kent running for 10 weeks – we are starting small, with so far 8 children being involved in the pilot – and we hope to increase our numbers for when our application for independent school status is accepted and we start as a full-time school in September 2018.
In their first week, the kids have chosen the project of measuring the Earth’s circumference! In order to do this, they’ll need some basic geometry skills, so they’ve been working on angles and degrees in a circle. Of course, the best tool for studying angles of a circle is pizza! The kids have found out that measuring the earth is tricker than they thought. They have been exploring how they could achieve this by learning about angles, percentages, curves, and fractions. Not to mention all the exciting people in history that they are discovering and the discussion about how they don’t fall off the earth.
The children have hypothesised about plant life, seed growth and the conditions required. Using resources developed by the Wellcome Trust and Kew, children used an identikit to find wild plants in the Pegwell Bay Nature Reserve. They researched the habitat, soil conditions, and plant types as preparation for their gardening project. They identified hawthorn, plantain, spear thistle, yarrow, daisy, and dandelion. This supported them to plant a variety of vegetable seeds in their gardening space alongside the estuary – potato, garlic and onion planting!
Our location for the pilot is Baypoint Sports Club – The location offers over an acre of wild grassland, 2 all-weather AstroTurf pitches and several grass football pitches, all situated in between Pegwell Nature Reserve and the estuary. Our indoor space is a large, flexible and informal teaching area, with tables and chairs, a stage area and table tennis tables.
